Going to Canada, Eh?

I had a great time in Canada visiting friends from Turkey. It's great to connect and spend time with people who shared in my time in Turkey. They also are in the process of re-entry, so it is also nice to have someone to process with.
I flew into Michigan on Thursday, where I met Caleb, one of my former students. He took me on a quick tour of his campus, Calvin College. I even got to see his dorm room. That night we went to a Turkish restaurant. The main dish was mediocre, but I enjoyed the ambiance and the opportunity to hear and speak Turkish. We were even treated to a wonderful baklava desert by the owner, who came out and talked to us (so Turkish!).

The next day we headed north. We drove six hours to Desbarts, a little town just outside of Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, Canada. It was a fun drive, we talked to entire way. We had no problem crossing the international bridge into Canada. They didn't even look at our passports. (Coming back in to the USA was almost as easy. They did look at a passports this time.)

Once in Canada, I did a little sightseeing and shopping with Hannah-Lee & Letitia. They also made sure I got to try some authentic Canadian fair. I loved butter tart, which is like a pecan pie without the pecans. We also had poutine, which is french fries covered in cheese and gravy. As a person who does not care for gravy, I was apprehensive. I actually really enjoyed it. It was dark gravy, which is the kind of gravy I do like. I liked the saltiness it added to the fries. Perogies was also one of my favorites, it was made of potatoes and cheese.

Eric & Hannah-Lee are living at their cousin's lake house. There are lots of lakes in Canada. The view from their back porch was amazing. (see previous post)
