One of my heroes is Lottie Moon. Like myself, she was a Virginia girl who had a passion for serving overseas. During the late 1800's she moved to China where she spent over 30 years working. At Christmas time in Southern Baptist churches, we have a special offering that is named after Lottie Moon. This offering is dedicated to International Missions. Lottie Moon herself died of starvation in China because she gave of everything she had to those in need around her. I can not begin to fathom what life must have been like for her, a single woman, living in China at that time. What a servant heart she had!
She said, "Is not the festive season when families and friends exchange gifts in memory of The Gift laid on the altar of the world for the redemption of the human race, the most appropriate time to consecrate a portion from abounding riches and scant poverty to send forth the good tidings of great joy into all the earth?"
I hope that this Christmas you will share what has God has blessed you with, with a cause like Lottie Moon, the Salvation Army, Operation Christmas Child, Angel Tree, or one of the many wonderful organizations out there.
