I took my 7th and 8th graders on a field trip this past week. We went to my apartment to watch the "Wizard of Oz". It was a good idea by my roomate, who suggested going there to watch the movie the last half of the day so we wouldn't take three days to watch the movie in class.
Why the "Wizard of Oz" you might ask? Well it is an allegory of the Populist Movement. We studyied the Populist movement first, then how it realtes to the "Wizard of Oz". For example the Tinman represents the dehumanized industrial workers. In the book, Dorothy worth silver slippers which symbolizes the Populists desire to have free silver added to the economy.
It was fun, I made popcorn. They are a good group of kids. Very culturally diverse you can see.
